First, trim the leeks – get rid of the dark green parts, so that you are only left with the white part and light green part. Next, wash the leeks. Then, chop the leeks – after you chop them, you can separate them into layers. And then, wash them again so that you can get rid of all the dirt between the layers. Once you wash them you should dry them and then you are ready to use leeks!

Ingredients for Caramelized Leeks

Fresh Leeks: 5-6
Olive Oil: 1 Tablespoon
Butter: 2 Tablespoons
Sugar: A pinch

How To Make Caramelized Leeks

Trim the leeks to cut off the roots on the bottom. Also, cut off the tough green parts on the top of the leek, leaving the light green and white parts. Take off any wilted pieces. Wash the leeks.

Next, cut each leeks lengthwise into halves. Then, chop each half-leek crosswise into half-circles on a cutting board. Now you will be able to separate the layers. Wash the chopped leeks again, to get of any dirt between the layers.

Once the leeks are clean, drain them in a colander, and then dry them, before using in this recipe.

Heat up oil and butter in a large saute pan.

Add leeks to the saute pan, and cook for 4-5 minutes stirring constantly. Reduce the heat to low or medium low, add the sugar, and continue cooking, stirring the leeks every few minutes.

Cook for 20-25 minutes or until the leeks are done.
