But if you want to take these buttermilk pancakes from scratch to a whole new level, then you can add chocolate chips to them.

We have done extensive testing on these pancakes, and you should not add the chocolate chips directly to the buttermilk pancakes batter. If you do that, the chocolate chips will not distribute equally, and the pancakes will not be good.

What you should do instead, if you want to make the best buttermilk pancakes with chocolate chips, is to add the chips directly into each pancake. As you add buttermilk pancake batter to the skillet, add a few chips on top of the pancake. That way the chips will be distributed well, and each pancake will have the same number of chips.

Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cook time: 30 minutes

1 1/3 Cups of White Flour
2/3 Cups of Whole Grain Flour
1 Tablespoon of Baking Powder
1 Tablespoon of Ground Flax Seeds
6 Tablespoons of Sugar
A pinch of Salt

2 Cups of Buttermilk
3 Eggs
1 Teaspoon of Vanilla Extract

Chocolate Chips
Canola oil

Jam
Pancake Syrup
Maple Syrup
Butter

In a mixing bowl combine white flour, whole grain flour, baking powder, sugar and ground flax seeds. Mix them together.

In another mixing bowl combine buttermilk, eggs and vanilla extract and mix.

Add the buttermilk mix to the dry ingredients, and mix, until the buttermilk pancake batter is smooth. Do not to add chocolate chips to the batter. Instead, you will add them to each pancake, as you start cooking them.

Heat up canola oil in both non-stick skillets. Pour just enough buttermilk pancake batter on each skillet for a pancake, about 1/4 – 1/3 cup. Immediately after adding the batter to the skillet, add 6 chocolate chips on top of each pancake.

Cook the pancakes for about 4 minutes, until it is golden brown. Then turn the pancake, and cook for 3-4 more minutes on the other side, until the other side is also golden brown.

Serve your delicious buttermilk pancakes with jam, butter or syrup.
